7 DAYS KILIMANJARO DOUBLE ROUTE TREK 2025

ASCEND VIA LEMOSHO ROUTE – DECEND VIA MARANGU ROUTE

7 days Kilimanjaro hiking up via Lemosho route and hiking down via Marangu route probably has a slight edge on the scenery in large part because the route up and down is different, Regardless, both routes are scenic and traverse the same range of ecosystems from tropical jungle, to mountain heath, alpine and finally apex or arctic. But the challenge comes when client select this option will be required to pay the double fees which might be expensive compared to the normal 7 days Lemosho package, where you descend via Mweka route The lesser-known Lemosho route begins on the western side of Mt Kilimanjaro. The first 2 days of the tour cross the thick rainforest belt which then changes into heath and moorland with many ferns and ericas along the way. The small trail sometimes has very steep passages and goes through diverse landscapes. On the third day, the trail joins the Machame route. On the 7-day Lemosho route with overnight at Kosovo camp, on day 5 there we trek from Karanga we pass Barafu camp direct Kosovo Camp for Overnight, allowing for a short day just prior to the summit attempt. Overnighting at Kosovo camp is important because we take a full night’s sleep and get up at our usual time, so climbers are sleep deprived going into thetoughest day on the mountain. By having a short day beforehand, climbers can be better rested. The 7-day Lemosho route with overnight at Kosovo camp is highly recommended.

DAY 0: ARRIVAL AT ARUSHA/KILIMANJARO AIRPORT – MOSHI

Upon arrival at Arusha /Kilimanjaro Airport you will meet your Burigi Chato Safaris guide who will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi Tanzania (for budget hotels we recommend KILIMANJARO WHITE HOUSE HOTEL). After the necessary registration has been completed, a bumpy drive will take you into the dense rainforest, from where your adventure commences. The moderately steep track makes its way through an unspoilt natural forest to the Big Tree Camp (2,780 m). On the moorland you will find lobelia and ericas dotting the landscape. You will pass Shira ridge before reaching Shira Camp 1 after 4 to 5 hours. Here you will have your lunch break and rest your limbs, enjoying the views of Mt Meru and the Rift Valley in the distance. You will trek for about another 3 hours, ascending 250 m. Walking on solidified lava, you will pass giant senecios, almost 9 meters in height, before finally reaching your destination of the day, the Shira Camp 2. You will enjoy an evening meal and with a little bit of luck you will be able to see the summit basking in the orange glow of the sunset.

The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower. From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft.

The vegetation becomes sparser as the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert. The route passes through the sweeping Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp.

Then head down through the Karanga Valley. This is the last place for your porters to gather water. They will collect all the water for the remainder of the ascent here. You will settle in here at the Karanga Camp. After lunch, you can spend the afternoon doing light exploring or resting while taking in the views of Mawenzi’s towering spires.

The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles.
Shortly after a hot lunch, we left Barafu Camp at 14,930 feet (4,550 m) – the normal setting off point for the summit attempt – and continued on one hour up to a higher, lesserknown camp called Kosovo where we would sleep a few hours before our midnight rise to climb to the top. Few people know about Kosovo Camp and staying there instead of at Barafu saved us an ugly first hour straight up climb at the onset of our quest to reach the top and we take a full night’s sleep and get up at our usual time. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy early dinner and night as the highlight of your trip is only a few short hours away.

You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

From the summit, we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment.
