It's a great area with some great day hikes - either a more strenuous day Kilimanjaro hiking up along the plateau's historic rim or something more casual adhering to its wavy floor, maybe going as far as the picturesque "cone place" or Shira Needles' at the Southern end of the plateau. The Shira Plateau region of Kilimanjaro provides a wonderful opportunity to ascend a tall mountain and see this magnificent World Heritage Site on foot in a single day. With deep valleys and damaged lava flows that stand out like twisted contemporary sculptures in the severe mountain weather, Kilimanjaro's Kibo Massif to the west of the mountain sweeps up to the glaciers close to the top.
This mountain's face is covered in many streams that eventually confluence to form a gulley that traverses the plateau and descends to the plains far below. On the plateau, there is a good quantity of wildlife, but the most of it is nocturnal and elusive. However, with little caution, the activities of the night may be reconstructed from the tracks near the watering holes on the streams. While there are herds of buffalo, there are also smaller herds of gazelles and bushbuck, and higher Kilimanjaro hiking up the mountain, there is evidence of an eland and an elephant, demonstrating that these larger species are sporadic visitors. on the mountain proving that these larger animals are occasional visitor.
