The Machame route, also known as the "Whiskey" route in Kilimanjaro climbing, is the most popular and scenic route to the top of Kilimanjaro. Machame's appeal lies in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, especially due to its shorter route. Therefore, this route is more suitable for adventurous people or those with experience of high altitude, hiking or backpacking. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the south, the Kilimanjaro climbing route begins with a short run from Moshi to Machame Gate. The trail takes through the rainforest to the Shira Plateau. Many of the routes of Kilimanjaro converge here.
The climb begins in the lush rainforest and follows a trail that offers occasional views of Mount Meru, Shira Ridge and Mount Kilimanjaro's main peak - Kibo. The Kilimanjaro climbing route then turns east and traverses the southern ice field of Kilimanjaro on a path known as the South Loop before reaching the summit from the Kosovo camp. On 7 days Machame route with overnight in Kosovo camp, on day 5 trek from Karanga, we pass Barafu camp, straight into Kosovo camp for the night, which allows for a fairly short day before the summit attempt.
