Laying usually takes place around January, February and March every year. In January, herds begin to move south into the Serengeti after the rains begin to fall. The question of how the flock knows when it's raining or not is something many people have asked and the answer is we really don't! Many say they can smell rain, others claim they can smell it when the air pressure changes. One thing we know for sure is that where it rains, the cattle follow. Within two to three weeks, more than half a million wildebeest are born and up to 8,000 wildebeest are born on the same day!
